The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) share a common heritage and vision that global seafood supplies should be sustainable, responsibly managed and supported by secure supply chains.
The focus of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is sustainable capture of wild seafood that recognizes and rewards efforts to protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for the future. The revised MSC Fisheries Standard V3.0 published in October 2022 features better protections for marine life, as well as stronger fisheries management and compliance requirements.
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) runs the world’s leading certification programme for responsibly farmed seafood. The ASC Standards set strict requirements for responsible seafood farming that encourage producers to farm with care for fish, the environment, and the people on and around the farm.
MSC and ASC Chain of Custody Certification
Chain of Custody ensures that a product from a certified fishery or farm bearing the blue MSC label or green ASC label will be separated from non-certifiable products and can be traced back to a certified source or supplier. For this to work, every company along the supply chain needs to be certified to the Chain of Custody Standard including supermarkets and restaurants, processors, distributors, and warehouses.
ASC uses the MSC CoC Standard to verify the origin of seafood sold as ASC certified with an additional module addressing aspects inherent to farmed seafood production, such as food safety and antibiotic detection.
