Standard: IEC 60068-2-27: Environmental Testing – Part 2-27: Tests – Test Ea and guidance: Shock

Scope: IEC 60068-2-27 – Test Ea defines procedures to assess a product’s ability to withstand mechanical shocks—both repetitive and non-repetitive. The test is designed to reveal mechanical weaknesses, performance degradation, or accumulated damage due to shock events.

Applicable Products: This standard applies to a wide range of components and systems, including:

  • Electronic control units (ECUs)
  • Sensors and actuators
  • Battery packs and modules
  • Lighting and infotainment systems
  • Enclosures and mechanical assemblies
  • Other components requiring validation for mechanical strength performance

Test Procedure: In our specialized test lab, we conduct IEC 60068-2-27 Test Ea: Shock testing using advanced vibration/shock equipment to simulate real-world conditions. The test procedure includes:

  • Mounting: The specimen is rigidly mounted to the shock table or fixture.
  • Shock Pulse Types: The test uses defined pulse shapes (e.g., half-sine, sawtooth, trapezoidal) to simulate real-world shock conditions.
  • Pulse Parameters: Shock severity is defined by peak acceleration (e.g., 50 g), pulse duration (e.g., 11 ms), and number of shocks (e.g., 3 shocks per axis for both positive and negative).
  • Orientation: Shocks are typically applied in multiple directions (X, Y, Z axes).
  • Monitoring: The specimen is inspected for mechanical damage and functional degradation during and after testing.

End Result: Successful completion of IEC 60068-2-27 Test Ea: Shock confirms that the product can endure mechanical shocks without structural failure or performance loss, ensuring reliability during handling, transport, and operation.
