IEC 60068-2-30 Test Db: Damp Heat, cyclic (12 + 12 h cycle) – Ensuring Component Performance in Damp Environments
Standard: IEC 60068‑2‑30: Environmental Testing – Part 2‑30: Tests – Test Db: Damp heat, cyclic (12 + 12 h cycle)
Scope: IEC 60068-2-30: Test Db evaluates the ability of components and equipment to withstand conditions of high humidity – combined with cyclic temperature changes, simulating natural environmental conditions such as dew formation and condensation. This test is critical for identifying moisture-related degradation, corrosion, and insulation breakdown in products exposed to fluctuating climates
Applicable Products: This standard applies to a range of products, including:
- Electronic control units (ECUs)
- Sensors and actuators
- Battery systems
- Lighting and Infotainment systems
- Mechanical assemblies and enclosures
Test Procedure: In our specialized lab, we conduct IEC 60068‑2‑30 Test Db: Damp Heat, cyclic using state‑of‑the‑art equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results. The test simulates real-world humidity and temperature fluctuations by exposing products to a repeating 24-hour cycle of heat and moisture. This test is designed to mimic natural day-night environmental conditions that can lead to condensation, corrosion, and material degradation. Each 24-hour cycle includes:
- Phase 1 – Warm, Humid Period (12 hours): The chamber is heated to a high temperature (typically 55°C) over typically a 3-hour period while maintaining relative humidity above 95%. This phase simulates daytime conditions in tropical or humid climates, where heat and moisture are at their peak.
- Phase 2 – Cool, Moist Period (12 hours): The temperature is gradually reduced to around 25°C, within 3 to 6 hours while humidity remains high. This cooling phase encourages condensation on the specimen’s surface, simulating nighttime dew formation or sudden environmental changes.
- Cycle Repetition: The cycle is repeated for a specified number of days (commonly 2, 6, or more), depending on the product’s intended use and reliability requirements.
- Specimen Setup: Products may be tested in powered or unpowered states. Mounting is done to avoid thermal bridging and ensure uniform exposure. Visual inspections and functional checks are performed before, during, and after testing to detect corrosion, insulation breakdown, or mechanical failure.
End Result: Successful completion of IEC 60068‑2‑30 Test Db: Damp Heat, cyclic confirms that components can withstand and function effectively in conditions of high humidity – combined with cyclic temperature changes.
