Scope: Per ASTM C1026: "This test method describes the procedures and equipment required to test either glazed or unglazed ceramic or glass tiles for resistance to repeated cycles of freezing and thawing. Tiles of any size or shape may be tested by this test method."

Test Procedure: Tile specimens are oven dried and cooled in a desiccator. The dry weight of each specimen is recorded, after which they are placed in boiling deionized water for 5 hours.Specimens are then soaked in water for at least 24 hours. Each specimen is placed horizontally in a freezing container that cycles between 27 ̊F and 40 ̊F. 300 freeze-thaw cycles are run and at the conclusion the specimens are removed from the freezing container and oven dried for 24 hours. The specimens are then weighed and visually inspected for cracks, disintegration, or spalling.
End Result: This test results in the total weight loss as well as the number of tiles that showed damage after testing.
