Intertek Launches Lighting Compliance Solutions to Meet Requirements of California Assembly Bill 1109
22 Sep 2009
Services to drive better transparency, understanding and compliance with the California Lighting Efficiency and Toxics Reduction Action
Intertek, the leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries globally, today launched services to help businesses understand and comply with the new California Lighting Efficiency and Toxics Reduction Act also referred to as California Assembly Bill Number 1109 (AB1109). The bill is intended to increase consumer purchase of energy efficient lighting and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
After January 1, 2010, AB1109 prohibits companies from manufacturing specified general purpose lights for sale in the state of California that contain levels of hazardous substances prohibited by the European Union pursuant to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.
To provide clarity and guidance on AB1109’s mandate, Intertek has launched client services in consulting and education, responsibility assessments, product screening, and third-party testing to help manufacturers define a clear path to compliance with AB1109.
Intertek will help companies identify and address their individual responsibilities by creating detailed compliance actions supported by testing programs that deliver a step-by-step strategy to meet all AB1109 deadlines. Training will include executive overviews on the impact of this legislation, impact, and deadlines.
On the testing side, Intertek has a long-standing history of performance testing and certification of energy efficient lighting products in accordance with Federal and State Government program criteria including California Energy Commission (CEC) Title 24, Energy Star and NRCan (Natural Resources Canada). Intertek maintains the accreditations, expertise and state-of-the-art facilities around the world to help manufacturers meet energy efficiency requirements.
In addition, Intertek offers XRF screening of shipments, warehouses and inventories for the presence of heavy metals.
Through its network of global laboratories, Intertek provides lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE testing. Reports generated as a result of this testing are required to support self-certification claims under AB1109.
“Businesses are struggling to understand their lighting compliance requirements under AB1109,” explains Joel Pekay, Global Business Development Director of Intertek’s Health and Environmental Services. “The lighting compliance solutions we’ve launched today will help our customers comply, understand and protect their business tomorrow.”
