Total Quality Assurance for reconditioned products to adhere to National Electric Code requirements

ETL Refurbishment Mark

As consumer demand, financial incentives, and regulatory measures drive the adoption of circular practices, strategies like remanufacturing and refurbishment are becoming essential for keeping valuable materials in productive use longer. Intertek's ETL Refurbishment Program ensures refurbished electrical products are evaluated, upholding both sustainability and safety for products returning to market.

Maintain Compliance for Refurbished Products with the ETL Refurbishment Program

Ensure your refurbished, remanufactured, or rebranded electrical products continue to meet applicable safety standards with Intertek's ETL Refurbishment Program. Stay compliant with the latest National Electrical Code (NFPA 70 – 2023), which requires reconditioned products to be relabeled and recertified before resale.

NFPA 70 – 2023: Why Refurbished Products Must Be Reassessed

Section 110.21(A)(2) of the 2023 NEC requires reconditioned electrical equipment to be marked with the name, trademark, or descriptive marking of the reconditioning organization, the date of reconditioning, and the word "reconditioned" or an approved symbol indicating reconditioning. The original listing mark must also be removed.

What is the ETL Refurbishment Program?

The ETL Refurbishment Program helps manufacturers, vendors, and original applicants verify that refurbished products—whether updated with new components or supply chain changes—remain compliant with current electrical safety standards.

How the ETL Refurbishment Certification Process Works

  1. Submit Product Details
Provide details about your refurbished product.
  1. Technical Review
Our experts assess changes in materials, components, and processes.
  1. Evaluation & Testing
Products are evaluated to the latest standards; additional testing is performed if required.
  1. Certification & Authorization
Upon approval, the product is issued the right to bear the ETL Certification Mark.

Program Scope and Considerations

The ETL Refurbishment Program applies to products currently or previously ETL Listed, Classified, or Recognized (with authorization), and products transferred from other NRTLs.
