Canada Proposes to Revise Regulations for Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets
Vol. 843 | 03 Aug 2015
Health Canada has proposed to revise the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinet Regulations, SOR/2010-261. The proposed requirements are intended to improve the safety of these products as well as to bridge the gap between the Health Canada requirements, the ASTM standards and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission rules for these products.
As products intended to provide unsupervised sleep environments, cribs, cradles and bassinets are required to meet high safety standards. The current changes proposed to the Canadian Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations aim at addressing the issues identified by Health Canada during various recalls, thereby strengthening the safety requirements for these products.
Significant proposed revisions include:
- An effective ban on traditional drop side cribs, cradles, bassinets and accessories, allowing easy access to the occupant
- Update in performance requirements and test methods for:
- Structural integrity of mattress supports
- Crib slat strength
- Correct assembly of key structural components
- Accessories and stands intended for use with cribs, cradles and bassinets
- Maximum rest angle and maximum flatness angle
- Completely bounded openings
- Maximum height of corner posts
- Stability
- Occupant restraints and cord length
Deadline for submitting public comments on proposed regulation is September 28, 2015.
