Updated ASTM F963 Toy Safety Standard Published
Vol. 1381 | 18 Oct 2023
ASTM International has published the revised ASTM F963 standard, reflecting changes approved within the ASTM Subcommittee on Toy Safety over the past few years.
The main technical revisions affect the requirements for:
- Acoustics
- Battery accessibility
- Expanding materials
- Projectiles
In addition, updates have been made to align requirements within the standard to federal and CPSC requirements relating to the following:
- Phthalates
- Exemptions for toy substrate materials
- Tracking labels
According to the provisions of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, once the revised standard is published and ASTM officially notifies CPSC of the revision, CPSC has 90 days to object to any changes that are not regarded as enhancing toy safety.
In the absence of any revisions, this version of the standard will then become a mandatory requirement under 16 CFR 1250, 180 days after notification.
