EU Adopts 2025-2030 Working Plan to Drive Sustainability in Textiles

The European Commission is taking a significant step towards sustainability with the adoption of delegated acts for textiles under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), scheduled for 2027. This initiative is part of the broader Ecodesign for Sustainable Products and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025-2030, which prioritizes textiles as a key product group for regulatory action.

The first ESPR Working Plan, adopted on 16th April 2025, prioritizes product groups based on environmental impact and improvement potential.

Summary of the Working Plan for Textiles

The working plan identifies textiles and apparel as a top priority due to their significant environmental impact and high potential for improvement.

Key measures include:

  • Product Lifetime Extension: Promoting durability and repairability to reduce waste and extend the usability of textiles.
  • Material Efficiency: Encouraging the use of sustainable materials and minimizing resource consumption during production.
  • Environmental Impact Reduction: Addressing water usage, waste generation, climate change, and energy consumption.
  • Information Transparency: Introducing requirements for clear product information, which will work in synergy with the Textile Labelling Regulation, currently under review.

Exclusions:

  • Footwear not prioritized due to lower environmental impacts and improvement potential than selected products but remains subject to the broader ESPR framework.

Why It Matters

The textile industry is a major contributor to environmental challenges, and these delegated acts represent a bold move to address these issues. By promoting repairability, recyclability, and the use of recycled content, the EU is paving the way for a circular economy in textiles.

This initiative not only benefits the environment but also supports innovation and competitiveness in the EU market.

What’s Next?

The delegated acts for textiles are set for adoption in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the EU’s journey toward sustainable consumption and production. These measures will empower consumers, reduce environmental impacts, and create new opportunities for businesses in the textile sector.

Stay tuned as the EU continues to lead the charge in creating a sustainable future for textiles and apparel!
