SUN - UL 82, Gardening Appliances Electric
Effective August 15, 2017
If the applicable requirements noted in the table are not described in your report(s), these requirements will need to be confirmed as met and added to your report(s) such as markings, instructions, test results, etc. (as required).
Effective Date (see Schedule below): June 6, 2018
Impact Statement:
- June 6, 2018 is the effective date, and new products submitted for certification on and after the effective date will be required to be investigated to UL 82 8th edition.
- Existing certifications of cordless gardening appliances, except for lithium-ion based systems, will be allowed to continue to be certified after June 6, 2018 and not be withdrawn provided there are no changes to the design that require a certification decision or until a new/revised requirement in UL 82 is determined as “Action Required” to require a file review in the future. For example, a gardening appliance that is modified by a single change such that the heating, impact and abnormal test(s) must all be performed is considered to be a modified product that requires a certification decision.
- Existing certifications of lithium-ion based systems (i.e. the battery system and the battery charger) to UL 82, 8th Edition will be reviewed by the effective date of June 6, 2018.
- In addition, after June 6, 2018, all new product designs and revised constructions of currently certified products (i.e. for gardening appliances where specific requirements are not covered in the Standard, UL 82) will be required to be evaluated in accordance with the new requirements of UL 62841-1.
The content in this SUN is largely based on the UL’s Continued Certification announcement, dated September 29, 2015.
Overview of Changes (Specific details of new/revised requirements are found in table below):
- The changes are only applicable for battery-operated gardening appliances.
- For Lithium-ion battery, additional charging & discharging tests under imbalanced conditions, e.g. one cell 50% of full charge with other cells fully discharged, also short circuit and overcharge tests are included.
- For backpack or similar battery systems, construction shall be checked for quick release of harness.
If the applicable requirements noted in the table are not described in your report(s), these requirements will need to be confirmed as met and added to your report(s) such as markings, instructions, test results, etc. (as required).
